Dear Band and Color Guard,
Our first football game is Friday at Challenger Columbia Stadium, so this email has a lot of information about the game day process. The full band rehearsesMonday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3-5:30PM; and Color Guard, Tuesday from 3-5:30PM. The calendar at the bottom of this email includes rehearsal shirt colors. Don't forget to bring a filled water jug to school on practice days! For the game Friday, students will wear the HEAT UNIFORM. See below for information, especially important for our incoming freshman parents, regarding what to expect on game day, how to purchase pre-sale home game day tickets, and a game day checklist of items needed. Section parent contact information, as well as a PDF of this email, are attached. Have a great week, Jennifer McBurnett 1st VP – Communications WHAT TO EXPECT ON GAME DAY On game day, students remain at the school. Typically, they will have a run-through of the performance and then eat dinner. The pre-purchased game meals will be served in the commons. If you did not purchase game meals, then you must either pack a "brown bag" dinner or drop a meal off to your student. Students are not allowed to leave the campus. If your student is in thefront-line percussion (pit), the procedure is a little different. These students will be loading the trailer. For those students with a pre-paid game meal, the meal will be delivered to them by a volunteer parent. If you are delivering a meal to your student, you will need to locate them either at the trailer or possibly in the percussion room. Students will change into their uniforms after eating their game meal. At that point, students will receive instructions from the directors and then load buses. WHAT'S IT LIKE AT THE GAMES? So much fun!! The band and color guard will sit together in a designated area of the football stadium. Parents can sit near the students. During the game, parent volunteers will work to fill the students' water jugs, chaperone students to the restrooms, push equipment onto the field, serve game drinks and pass out washcloths. Students can drink water in the stands, but they are not allowed to eat while in their uniform. That is why it's so important for the students to receive a game meal prior to putting on their uniform and leaving for the stadium. Send your student to school with their water jugs filled with ice and water on game day. Make sure that the student's name and instrument is on the lid and that it is legible. During the season the names begin to rub off and it's difficult for parent volunteers refilling the jugs to know which student owns the jug. Before half-time the students will leave the stands and go to a designated area nearby to practice. After the halftime performance the students will return to the stands to put down their instruments. Then they will gather in a designated area (behind the stands) for the 3rd quarter break. They will receive their pre-ordered game drink and ice-cold washcloths are available to help cool them down. After the break they will return to the stands. At the end of the game, the CLHS song is played, and the band is dismissed to load instruments and then get on the buses to return to the high school. Once everyone has returned to the school, students will unload the instruments from the trailer. As soon as everything has been unloaded, the students will be free to leave. HOW DO I PICK UP MY CHILD AFTER THE GAME? Students may be picked up either in front of the school or in the back parking lot by the band hall doors. Please do not park in the way of the buses so that students can quickly unload. Do not park in the first row of the back parking lot in front of the band hall doors. This area is reserved for the 18 wheeler so the students can easily unload the instruments. If your student is in the pit, it may take some time to unload all the pit instruments. You might want to keep in touch with your student to find out the best time to arrive to pick them up. WHAT DOES MY STUDENT PACK FOR GAME DAYS? It depends on whether the students will be wearing heat uniforms or the full marching uniform. If students are wearing heat uniform (LIKE THIS WEEK), they will need band cap, red game shirt, blue shorts, marching shoes and short, no-show black socks. They will load buses wearing their heat uniforms and will carry on the bus their filled water jug. All music needs to be neatly organized in a flip folder, and lyres should be used to hold music for specific instruments. Rain ponchos stay in the tote bags in case of rain. For those with small instruments, these are carried on the bus along with specific items they need for their instrument such as reeds, mouthpieces, etc. Write your student's name on the inside of each of their marching shoes. They are hard to see on a dark bus and often get left behind. Please see the Game Day Checklist at the end of this document.
